SEAM is proud to partner with the Canadian Women’s Foundation and supports its mission of empowering girls and women out of the cycles of poverty and violence. We have long admired the CWF’s compassionate approach to creating a more equal and just world for all of us. CWF has made many significant advancements since 1991 (!), and we’re thrilled to be able to contribute to their programs. SEAM will be donating a portion of all sales proceeds to the Canadian Women’s Foundation through the next year. Every Lotus device that you purchase will go toward funding CWF’s numerous invaluable programs.

Read the following Q & A for more information about what the CWF does and how you can help.

Tell us more about the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

First of all, a big thank you from the Canadian Women’s Foundation!

Forward-thinking companies like SEAM understand that supporting the advancement of gender equality will benefit all Canadians. The funds you raise for the Foundation will go toward programs across the country that help move women and girls out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership. When you support these programs, you not only impact participants, you help to positively change families and create safer communities along the way.

Laura’s story is just one example – she left an abusive relationship and began to rebuild her life with the help of services provided by a shelter. “I started to find my voice and shape my own destiny, breaking the cycle of violence for myself and future generations of women in my family—today, my daughter has a husband who treats her with respect.”

Since our inception in 1991, the Foundation has raised more than $90 million and funded over 1,900 programs across the country. With the help of supporters like you, we also raise public awareness about gender-based violence and poverty, the barriers facing girls, and the need to support inclusive leadership. We work to strengthen the women’s sector and advocate for the long-term change that will lead toward gender equality.

What is the CWF focused on for 2019?

The impact of the #MeToo Movement in Canada is only one recent indicator of how much work is left to be done to advance gender equality. In fact, we conducted a survey this year that found Canadians’ understanding of consent has actually declined from 33% in 2015 to 28%. So there’s a crucial need for our continuing work to educate young people about healthy relationship skills and prevent sexual assault and harassment.

On a national level, the Foundation is focused on expanding our role as an advocate for gender equality and systemic change. One of our more recent projects is convening the Gender Equality Network Canada. This group of more than 130 leaders from across Canada are working together over the next three years to create a national action plan for gender equality and to advocate for policy change and collective action. This project is one of the ways our Foundation plays a key role in developing national and regional strategies to address gender inequality.

What is one thing about the work that the CWF does that you are most proud of?

There are many intersecting factors that can impact women’s experience of equality, including race, culture, economic status, ability, and gender identity. The Foundation is proud to prioritize funding to programs that serve women and girls who face multiple barriers, in the communities across Canada that need these programs the most. For example, last year we funded 18 programs in remote areas and 23 programs that primarily serve First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

In the words of Rosemary Brown, one of our founding mothers, “Until all of us have made it, none of us have made it.”

What is the best way for someone to get involved in helping CWF’s programs?

By becoming a donor, you help provide life-changing programs that:

  • Support women to rebuild their lives after leaving violent relationships
  • Provide employment training to women living in poverty
  • Show girls how to defy stereotypes and realize their potential
  • Offer leadership skills and opportunities to women and girls

The best way to support this critical work and maximize your impact is to become a monthly donor, which helps to provide sustained funding: You can also help raise awareness of the issues and spread word of our work by following us on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube), signing up for our e-newsletter, and reading our blog.

On behalf of the Canadian Women’s Foundation, we are so happy to be partnering with SEAM as we work together to support gender equity in Canada. The funds raised through the Lotus will help to support over 100 community programs from coast to coast to coast that move women and girls out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership.”
